I think the notion is that if you are the good guys you have to behave as such. Yes, it gives you a bit of a disadvantage but if you have to become evil to overcome evil then you win the battle and lose the war. There is a thing called the 'high moral road' or 'conscience'. Perhaps you've heard of them?
