I do pro bono work, cheerfully, for a medical center in Seneca Falls, NY.
The owning physician has some programs directed at the elderly in his
community. Once I saw how comprehensive the offerings were, and heard him
chat with an associate about how it is his way of giving back, I decided to
join ranks with him in my own little way. If he needs software or hardware,
he gets it at my dead cost (like any other client). But he never gets a
billing for labor any longer, not for the past 6 years or so.

I also do pro bono work for the church where Lynda and I got married. In
their case I cover all hardware, software, renewal and DSL costs in addition
to no labor fees. I do take a deduction from income tax for the hard cost
items, of course.

I have offered to do pro bono work for HuskySavers, an operation that
rescues abandoned Siberian Huskies and tries to find new homes for them.
They are pretty well set with their techie needs, but I have left that offer
open for them to take whenever needed.

And, of course, there is family and some friends. Friends of friends do not
count. But the Accounts Payabel gal at a client location out here does get
pro bono, and my invoices are always paid the day she gets it at my client
facility <g>.

I have never been abused by anyone other than friends of friends. Hence, I
always make certain I am too busy for that. I usually direct such folks to
Mike Wohlrab, letting them know Mike does great work, interned under my
(mis)guidance for several years, and has a very reasonable labor rate <g>...
With friends of friends, like the old saying goes, "Gas, grass or ass.
Nobody rides for free.", except I do not need any of those particular trade
commodities.
