I am not sure as I only get a very small percentage of the profits from the book. I actually never thought about how much Microsoft paid. I think the fact that they purchased them at all was very generous and a positive for the community (and one they probably never got much credit for doing). Same for all the Focus issues they did with CoDe Magazine.
