Here are common traps:
a)  field length must be the same, or the relation must explicitly deal with
unequal field lengths.
b)  case counts
c)  a corrupt index will cause this to fail.
d)  field type must be the same, or the relation must explicitly deal with
conversions

If you post the code and data structure something might jump out.
