Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Ted Roche recommended jstree.com off list and I'm going to give that a spin.
The list of categories is dynamic and is coming from a VFP table that the owner manipulates often. We'll see if jsTree can handle what I throw at it. I'll keep the list updated on my progress.
