Ken, I often use gmail when I subcontract for other firms. It works well and its certainly easy to search. But it doesn't support real folders. You can tag mails to group emails, but this design doesn't work for me.
I'm a big fan of Fastmail which has a clean, simple, easy to use interface that supports an unlimited number of folders and sub-folders. Fastmail also supports sophisticated based email filing rules that allow you to automatically route incoming mail to specific folders. Furthermore, you can manage multiple email accounts, including multiple email accounts across multiple custom domains, via one set of folders. For example: I have a VFP folder that collects emails from a variety of VFP mailing lists and vendors. And I have a Python folder that collects Python related emails from an even larger set of mailing lists and vendors. Over time I've created dozens of folders to collect and manage my email. Other folders are for my travel related emails, finance emails, invoicing emails, emergency support emails, voicemails, faxes, etc. You can learn more about Fastmail at http://fastmail.fm.
