ODBC driver is part of the local engine and is free. The big advantages to their database include using the same DBFs you are using today (no migration to a new database server), you can hide them from prying eyes behind the server (no user access with Excel or copying files to a memory stick and walking out the door), online backups, and breaking the 2GB limit. Yes, your app does access the data via backend server techniques (remote views, cursoradapters, SQL passthrough) so your app has to change if you are not doing things the client-server way. I thought it would be worth forwarding this to y'all. For me, PostgreSQL is doing a fine job. But I am not in a position where I am prohibited from using Open Source solutions by a client or employer either <g>. I have an earlier license for ADS (from a client who stopped using it because it was "too hard" compared to Access), but I never felt the need to play with it. An ADS license retails for I think $2,500 for 10 users (YMMV <g>), so it is not a low cost solution when compared to PostgreSQL, Firebird, or MySQL for free. But it is certainly far less costly than "non-Express" MS SQL Server or Oracle (I have not priced those for a while, but they are much more than $2,500 for 10 users), and they do have some interesting info if you look at the link(s) provided below. It scales far beyond the SQL Server Express 4Gb database size limit, which may be attractive to some folks. And it looks like it is fairly easy to setup and administer. Ciao!
