I had ME on a laptop, and saw a few folks try to "upgrade" to it from 98. I found if it came on a new machine ME was not too terrible, just somewhat terrible. As an upgrade it was horrible. When M$ came out with 2000 Pro the ME support site stated any further problems would be corrected by upgrading to 2000 Pro. That said it all... And, of course, as good as 2000 Pro was by the time SP4 came out, the network aspect of it was a bit different as compared to prior Windows OS platforms re: how easy it was to connect machines together. M$'s initial response was to upgrade everybody to 2000 Pro. I simply mapped networked machines via their IP (less effective with DHCP machines <g>). Later I discovered WINS Service, but where there is no Windows Server that was of little help.
Linux is no easy-to-do networking either, even with SAMBA. I still struggle at times with SAMBA and share pemissions. Once I relearn how to do it all is well. But the damned things are so solid I never have to reconfigure them. Hence when I set up a new machine with new shares it is like learning all over again!
