A Domain Registrar is only good for one thing: domain registration. All domain 
registrars let DNS entries "point elsewhere" (domain registration != dns 
hosting).

Don't let the domain registrar host your DNS; don't let them host your email or 
www. 
Use a hosting provider for that, or do it yourself.

I don't think there's ever a reason to telephone your domain registrar. Just 
get the 
domain registered/transferred, then set up 2 or more DNS servers on the domain 
record, and the registrar's job is done.

I pay around $15 per year for my domains, using dotster.com. There are cheaper 
registrars out there, and there are more expensive ones, too.
