I've got the code39 programming manual and there doesn't seem to be
anything to put the asterisks back. 

Weird one, I remember scanning a code on the other system but I cannot
remember what it was.

I've had to deal with something like that in the past...  if you
download the manual I'll bet you'll find pages w/ barcodes that
control/reset the scanner. Just scan the page and you are all set...

In my case I just needed it to do an auto carriage return....
