So the author of this article has a blog at blogspot:

I was stunned at how much I found myself agreeing with him, in particular
his views on free trade:

http://bit.ly/12KjVZ

Which are quite unconventional but essentially compatible with my own. He's
wrong that it is Mercantilism of the 1600's that was best -- in fact, it was
the American tariff revenue system (in force from 1789 - the 1930's) that
really showed what "domestic production for domestic consumption" in the
context of a well-defined, free unfettered system was all about per Adam
Smith's Wealth of Nations -- with which our Founders were very familiar as
they set out to build our free republic.

He even uses my favorite Karl Marx quote on the subject:

"But, in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while
the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and
pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme
point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is
in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free
trade."

Carl Marx, "On the Question of Free Trade" (1848)

That is one of several issues where I am about as un-Republican as it is
possible to be: I oppose it on principle. My view of Free Trade is basically
that if a country wants it, they need to join the Union to get it.

I never found David Ricardo's "law" of comparative advantage to be anything
but a sophist's joke, the punch-line of which we are now experiencing as one
country's government-induced mortgage debacle becomes a global nightmare
that destabilizes everything.
