And a little over a year before that, and equally disturbing but completely
unreported phenomenon (well, unreported in the media -- this "Holy crap what
we're doing isn't working" paper is directly from the Fed Reserve of San
Francisco dated April 2, 2008):

This kind of thing doesn't just happen by accident. It's like the back of
the ship was hit by a mine on Aug. 9, 2007, the captain came to the
conclusion that trying to stop the intake of water with buckets wasn't
working early in 2008, and the rest of the crew became suddenly aware of it
on Sept 18, 2008 when a torpedo hit the engine room and everyone started
running for life boats.
