Peter, Late to this thread so I may have misunderstood your original question (sorry too lazy to check the archives).
When we had VFP display issues in the past, we would FIRST position our application off-screen using very negative _screen positions. Then we would update our application screen while it was off-screen so all the dirtiness was hidden from the user. (Just like making sausage) When our application's screen complete, we would move it into the visible portion of a user's display.
