In 1996 I had an emergency appendectomy in Russia. I didn't pay a dime for it, it was covered under their free health care system. In 2004 I had a microdiscectomy on my L5 in America, where they removed a third of the ruptured disc to alleviate pressure off my sciatic nerve. I paid a couple thousand out of pocket, and insurance paid the rest---it was quite expensive. I have had no residual pain in my back since, and the scar is barely visible to the naked eye. I went from being in agony one day, to waking up with a strange sensation caused by the tiny stitches in my back. The scar in my abdomen looks like somebody took a machete to me, I'm constantly fighting adhesions. The wound took months to heal properly. I still remember having to borrow my room mate's used Bic disposable to shave my stomach myself, the pot holes in the hospital hallways (with some of the windows blown out), and the anesthesiologist who looked like Lurch from the Adams' Family literally "mixing" my anaesthetic on the spot by hand before administering it to me, since they apparently didn't have what he was used to using in supply. All things considered I'm glad the microdiscectomy wasn't done in Russia.
