WRT the deficit story: I'd like to challenge Ed to a logic puzzle.

Namely:

Obama correctly faulted Bush and the Republicans for adding $4 trillion to
the deficit over 8 years. He never ceases to mention the deficit he
inherited. His treasury secretary has asked Congress, where his party enjoys
a rare super-majority (something even the Republicans never had), to
increase the federal debt limit immediately. Now he is raising his 10 year
deficit increase estimates from $7 trillion to $9 trillion, and is proposing
$2 trillion annual budget deficits that tower over even the worst that Bush
offered (for the record, around $400-$500 bil. was the largest one-year
budget deficit under Bush). Yet he continues insisting that he will halve
the deficit in ten years, and that we are finally making hard choices and
being fiscally responsible. How are his claims reconcilable to reality?

I must be epistemologically challenged because, personally, I'm stumped -- I
cannot reconcile his promises with reality, assuming positive intent to
reduce the deficit rather than merely redefine it (e.g., through
hyperinflation). But perhaps Ed's superior organs of ratiocination can help
me see my logical error. ;-)
