I enjoyed the content from the link you provided. The Catholic Church, like all organized religions, is obsessed over the issue of sex, (eg what is moral sex, and what is immoral sex).
The Catholic Church, under the leadership of Pope Benedict, is ultra conservative, which is just another way of saying very slow to change even as the world move towards greater enlightenment. I hope the Italian constitution has strong provisions addressing keeping the church separated out of government affairs; otherwise, the church would be fertile grounds upon which forces, like neoconservatives, LOL, or other fascist, could gain control of the country by bring the church and state together under shared theocratic rule. This is essentially what happened during the Spanish Inquisition when the Catholic Church and government joined forces to share power in ruling Spain.
