Very interesting article, and it feels dead on per the Gil Hale Gut Check.

Until I started to use 1/2 of our basement for our Server Room it was not
unusual for our computer rooms to hit 88 degrees, during summer reaching 90.
We have a 2,500 Sq Ft Ranch House with an overcapacity air conditioning
system (I knew I needed a lot of oomph for what I thought we would end up
having for equipment). It can keep the entire house cool overall, but the
Hot Spots were always the 2 Computer Rooms on the main level (4 bedroom
house, with only 1 bedroom <g>). I have run auxiliary venting into the
large computer room, and got some thermal relief.

But, early this year I decided to clear out 1/2 of our large basement, and
set it up as a Server Room. The basement has concrete walls, which act as a
natural heat sink. I had the electrical outlets upgraded to Isolated Ground
plugs, ordered some nice Bush furniture (www.bush-furniture-online.com),
then began moving older and new equipment down there. Wow, what a
difference on the main level! The Computer Rooms are now more tolerable
(83-84), although still warmer than the rest of the house (76-78). The
basement Server Room has had a slight increase in temperature (about 79-81),
but still a tremendous improvement over 88 degrees+!

Anyway, more to the point of the article... I always felt trying to cool a
computer room to sub-70 and lower was a misguided, wasted effort. I figured
if a room got below 75 degrees we would be "over-fighting" the temperature.
It is nice to see my current heat load being held in check to a reasonable
degree is not as crazy as many would have otherwise thought.
