I do a bit of both.  In the valid clause of the field I will put

return empty(this.value) or mycheck(this.value)

Then they can leave it blank and it will pass the test when they click 
cancel.

If they click OK, then you have to check they have filled in a value, 
which is easy in the click of the button

if empty(somevar)
   messagebox('You have not entered a reference')
   return
endif

thisform.mysave()

This means they can't save until they enter a reference, but can escape 
(cancel) at any time.
