I repair computers for the general public and from my experience AVG rates somewhere in the middle of antimalware systems. Avast is quite good which I load on all of my customers' PCs. No system is perfect however.
I have found most of my customers use Norton or McAfee and when they bring in a PC loaded with viruses I can only conclude that these packages are not doing the job. Many times the viruses have actually compromised these programs so they don't work at all and gone on to corrupt Windows files like .DLLs. I have had only one customer using Zone Alarm in several years. It is a suite covering a dozen or so types of antimalware but it had failed in this case allowing some really nasty viruses through. I uninstalled it to do my analysis and after three hours of work discovered it had left behind an artifact that would block Internet access after five minutes from boot time. One has to use a special uninstall program from Zone Alarm to completely remove the package safely. The biggest problem I have run into is caused by Spam and popups from web sites. None of the antimalware suites block these very well because they are not actually viruses until a user clicks on a button causing them to install something. Then it is too late. Avast is no longer free. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Weller" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 16, 2009 3:35 PM Subject: RE: Fw: McAfee and FTP > I've found both Avast and AVG to be good value (they're free <g>) > > John Weller > 01380 723235 > 07976 393631 > >> -----Original Message----- >> From: [email protected] >> [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Rafael Copquin >> Sent: 16 October 2009 21:19 >> To: [email protected] >> Subject: Re: Fw: McAfee and FTP >> >> And should I ask McAfee to refund the money I paid for their software? >> Sorry, but that is not a good approach.
