I know I ran into issues not so much creating, but restoring a drive from a
Ghost image due to what turned out to be a hardware issue. I have been
using a lot of the Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme external hard drive units,
1.5Tb, in the past yeat (750Mg before 1.5Tb units came out). I like the
FreeAgent line and have had good luck with them. I pay the extra amount for
the USB2/Firewire/eSata II interface option as opposed to the USB2 only
interface units. And for the more recent machinery I have been installing
an eSATA PCI-Express card and using the eSATA II 3.0Gb/Sec connections -very
fast. But on older machine with PCI only slots I just use USB2, which
seemed to work fine, at least for creating ghost images and doing SyncBack
file-by-file backups.

Well, one thing I ran into with the FreeAgent was they go to sleep after a
15 minute period of non-use, and for Mac OS X and 2003 Server they do not
wake back up. But, at least Seagate includes software that allows me to
manage the sleep management, so I disable it and now no problem with the HDD
units going to sleep and not waking up properly for any OS, and not waking
up at all for Mac OS X and Server 2003 <g>. I thought that was that, and
life has been good.

The other month (I should have posted this back then, sorry folks) I needed
to restore a Drive C boot partition from an image stored on a 1.5Tb USB2
interfaced Seagate FreeAgent (non-Xtreme model). I used the Ghost CD to
boot from, and 1/3 into the restore the process failed. Long story short,
turns out the circuitry for the USB2 interface apparently becomes
overwhelmed with so much continually transmitted data and chokes, so to say.
So I moved the new HDD and FreeAgent to a machine with an open eSATA, and
spare internal SATA, set of connections, and the restore process worked
perfectly with data flowing at the eSATA/SATA II speeds for the two hard
drives. So I guess from here out I am going to spend a little more for dual
eSATA port PCI-Express cards, and not use USB2 as much as in the past. I do
not know if this is an issue with the FreeAgent (Xtreme or not) units or
not, but it is troubling. I know I have restored images from FreeAgent
units in the past via USB2 connections, but usually the boot drives have
less than 25G of files - whereas the unit with the failing restore via USB2
had a boot partition of over 700Gb (I normally try to not use large boot
drives)! So until I ran into needing to restore a very large boot partition
I never had a problem.

So, there it is, another Heads Up for my fellow FoxHeads!
