What you need in the way of protection depends on where you are. If you're in France, and crime, drug wars, civil unrest, ethnic friction, and physical violence are all very much under control with a well trained, fast responding police force, then you may not feel a need to have a means to protect yourself should the sh:t hit the fan, but my faith in others for protection is not so strong. I became spoiled during the TET offensive in early 1968, when I had access to my M-16 just a few feet away from me, which was very reassuring.
If I lived in a area torn by war, whether convention war like those in Iraq and Afghanistan or non convention war like in Mexico between drug cartels or drug cartels versus law/military enforcement, then I might feel a need for more than even a flame-thrower; although, a flame-thrower really doesn't seem like the right tool, except for use in convention warfare. Anyone can be caught unprotected in a life threatening situation, (eg being in the wrong place at the wrong time), but if at all possible, I would rather be safe, (eg armed and ready to protect myself), than sorry.
