Look for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry
Reid to try to circumvent the traditional conference committee process
by which the different versions of health care reform passed by each
house will be reconciled. If so, it will be the latest example of
violating principles of transparency and accountability in the
single-minded pursuit of legislative victory.

...

But serious dialogue isn't what Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader
Reid are interested in right now. Look for the traditional conference
committee to be replaced by a "ping-pong" game in which health care is
finalized behind closed doors with little public scrutiny before the
bill is rushed to the floor of each chamber for a final vote.

2010 cannot come quickly enough.

--

"It ought never to be forgotten, that a firm union of this country,
under an efficient government, will probably be an increasing object
of jealousy to more than one nation of Europe; and that enterprises to
subvert it will sometimes originate in the intrigues of foreign
powers, and will seldom fail to be patronized and abetted by some of
them. Its preservation, therefore ought in no case that can be
avoided, to be committed to the guardianship of any but those whose
situation will uniformly beget an immediate interest in the faithful
and vigilant performance of the trust." [Federalist Papers #59]
