HAVANA — Twenty-six patients at Cuba's largest hospital for the
mentally ill died this week during a cold snap, the government said
Friday.

Human rights leaders cited negligence and a lack of resources as
factors in the deaths, and the Health Ministry launched an
investigation that it said could lead to criminal proceedings.

A Health Ministry communique read on state television blamed
"prolonged low temperatures that fell to 38 degrees Fahrenheit (4
Celsius) in Boyeros," the neighborhood where Havana's Psychiatric
Hospital is located.

It said most of the deaths were from natural causes such as old age,
respiratory infections and complications from chronic diseases
including cancer and cardiovascular problems.

The statement came in response to reports from the independent Cuban
Commission on Human Rights that at least 24 mental patients died of
hypothermia this week, and that the hospital did not do enough to
protect them from the cold because of problems such as faulty windows.

Yeah, the Cuban health care system is definitely superior to ours. I
mean, look how many people died in our hospitals during the cold snap,
and compare.

The richest industrial nation in the world, and we couldn't even kill
off one old fart or political prisoner in a gulag (aka, "mental
hospital") during the worst cold snap in 30 years! For shame!

I note parenthetically that people dying of hypothermia in the tropics
highlights the need to pay Michael Mann even more hundreds of
thousands of dollars of stimulus money on top of the $500K+ he got
last year to study global warming. Who needs jobs when the whole earth
is about to become a giant ball of fire! We need studies! Conferences!
Treaties!

"It ought never to be forgotten, that a firm union of this country,
under an efficient government, will probably be an increasing object
of jealousy to more than one nation of Europe; and that enterprises to
subvert it will sometimes originate in the intrigues of foreign
powers, and will seldom fail to be patronized and abetted by some of
them. Its preservation, therefore ought in no case that can be
avoided, to be committed to the guardianship of any but those whose
situation will uniformly beget an immediate interest in the faithful
and vigilant performance of the trust." [Federalist Papers #59]
