The whole "tea party" phenomenon started when Santelli at CNBC
half-jokingly called for new tea parties on the floor of the Chicago
exchange (if I recall properly), in response to administration
policies.

This was all the way back in March of last year. Almost immediately, a
huge grassroots explosion of enthusiasm for the concept was ignited.
The political class tried to belittle and ignore it, pretend the
crowds either weren't there or looked more like a gathering of their
own property-destroying environmental whacko kooks, even thought they
were oh-so-clever for using the term "tea baggers" to deride its
members ("tea bagging" being apparently a reference to a homosexual
sex game).

But it was knocking out liberal Republicans in primaries like so many
flies, and brought solid Republican gubernatorial victories in VA and,
more unlikely, NJ. But for national GOP stupidity, it would have won
in NY-23 as well.

How ironic that the home of the first real "tea party" last night
delivered the most powerful electroshock therapy yet to our ailing
body politic. The only thing transparent about Obama-Reid-Pelosi
agenda is its brazen corruption and contempt for Constitutional
safeguards against federal tyranny, and if the voters of Massachusetts
are repulsed by it, you can know it reeks indeed.

Last night, a glimmer of hope. The backlash is coming. If such a thing
can happen even in Massachusetts, you can know the anger is for real,
and can't be explained away as generic anger at banks or unemployment.
This anger has a direction, and contrary to Steny Hoyer's
award-winning ballsy spin, it wasn't directed at "GOP obstructionism"
-- indeed, until now, the GOP wasn't even able to obstruct
effectively.
