When I hypothesize He wrote "STONE HER" I should clarify that he probably didn't write those exact words; more likely, he quoted passages from the Torah that said what the punishment was. I have heard the theory that he wrote their sins on the sand, and I don't out of hand reject it; but it doesn't account for the other important details about it being the Sabbath, in the Temple, and frankly a really obvious question. The idea that they were setting him up for a charge of sedition, on the one hand, or denying the law of Moses on the other, is confirmed throughout the accounts of how they tried to trap him (the whole bit about paying taxes to Caesar was another variation on the theme... I don't suppose you want to hear my latest theory about that?... also not what I've thought previously.) It also adds a really interesting angle into how craftily Jesus handled all the ways they schemed to ensnare Him. - Publius > > But it wouldn't have had to have been that to have the same effect.
