Well, it would go inside the encrypted VPN tunnel, but you do still run some risk of your data becoming exposed, especially since SSL keys are becoming less and less trustworthy of late. But you'd run that exact same risk going over a web service or something. I've found acceptable performance with properly-structured queries (ie, something better than SELECT * from table LIMIT 2000) from VFP going over the VPN to a MySQL database. Not like being there, but not horrible, either.
