The U.S. is infested with gangs who contribute most to the gun killings. You
are lucky in Australia not to have violent drug gangs linked to drug cartels
right across the border. Most cities in the U.S. have a neighborhood that I
wouldn't dare walk through during the day let alone at night. e.g. New
Haven, CT; Bridgeport, CT; New London, CT.

You also have to distinguish between handguns and rifles. Very few Americans
have handguns and those that do keep them locked up in a safe place. On the
other hand I venture to say that many have rifles but do not walk around
with them because they are cumbersome. Most killings are by handguns either
accidently or on purpose.
