I don't know if this will help but I do this sort of thing all the time. 
I create a dbf that will accept all of the columns - and column widths - 
and do an APPEND FROM TYPE XL5.

If it is older you can try XLS.

I have never had a problem except with the very new stuff.

I use OO and since you can open it up in that, I would follow other 
advice you received and save it in a VFP friendly format.  ie. comma 
delimited.
