It seems to me it's one of those mass psychosis things. In the town
where I went to college there was a student nightclub near a bridge, and
there was a spate of people leaving the nightclub and jumping off the
bridge for a period. There was a small  town in Wales a while back where
a large number of teenagers killed themselves for no discernible reason.
Here in Ireland we have occasional bouts of impressionable dingbats
claiming they can see statues of Mary moving, or Jesus in a cornflake
and so on. It probably doesn't help that working conditions there are
bad.
