Obviously, the fact that a study of a Congressional parking garage
got more funding than the deficit reduction panel is indicative of
Congress’ priorities. That being said, why isn’t $500,000 enough (and
why would you need more than half a million to study the building of a
parking garage)?

The deficit commission is tasked to produce a report on December
1st. The commission was formed on February 18th. So the commission
will have operated, presuming no delays in the issuance of its report,
for nine and a half months.

The funding it has is $52,631/month. And somehow…that’s not enough money?

"It ought never to be forgotten, that a firm union of this country,
under an efficient government, will probably be an increasing object
of jealousy to more than one nation of Europe; and that enterprises to
subvert it will sometimes originate in the intrigues of foreign
powers, and will seldom fail to be patronized and abetted by some of
them. Its preservation, therefore ought in no case that can be
avoided, to be committed to the guardianship of any but those whose
situation will uniformly beget an immediate interest in the faithful
and vigilant performance of the trust." [Federalist Papers #59]
