I am looking into getting a new system with Windows 7, as I am going to be doing some work with the technologies available in that "other" development system from Microsoft and will need the latest version of IIS which can't be installed on XP. We could probably use another notebook around the house so perhaps it is time for me to upgrade, pass mine current notebook down to my wife, Shannon gets hers, and Daniel gets the "kids notebook". Then everyone will have their own notebook and I can get rid of a couple of doorstops/monitors; maybe I'll turn one of them into a Mame cabinet, but I digress...
So I need a notebook with either Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate because those are the versions that have IIS. However every store I checked this weekend here in LA has nothing but Windows 7 Home versions which don't include IIS. That leaves me two choices: 1) order one online from the manufacturer (What's the word on Dell these days?) and customize it the way I want. or 2) Get one off the shelf and purchase an 'upgrade' to Pro or Ultimate. I'm tempted to do #2, but I like to do the old "freeman c:" every so often and rebuild my system from scratch. What kind of issues would I have with the update during reinstall, or is it just a new key? Any additional Activation hassles? Or would I be better off getting a box that comes with a restore disk of the version I actually use? Anybody been down this road? Any thoughts? Ideas? Complaints?
