I don't know anything about Vonage or your cable modem, but what I do with the
local phone company in Las Vegas
(CenturyLink) is put their modem in bridge mode and then my router can be
pinged.

Subject: [OT] Pinging a vonage box

OK

I have a vonage box that is going up and down and leaving my mother without
service for periods of time. I can try to
teach her how to reboot the modem and router but I'm not at all confident she
will do it.

So the Vonage box is actually a router which I can change settings in. I can
route ports, set filters, etc...

The box sets itself up as 192.168.15.1 by default and is its own DCHP server.
OF course the address scheme if I want
to.

How do I ping that box from outside the network? I want to use a utility that
tells me exactly when that router and/or
the modem is off-line.

The Cable Modem is able to be pinged, but what about the router behind it?
