My wife is retired from Northwest Airlines so I do not BUY tickets. One of her perks with retirement is that we get to fly space available. Frequently I see people who are holding standby tickets that were paid for when the standby seating is occurring. >> >> What it means is that you do NOT have an assigned seat. Sure I have not made a flight on the intended day. That is sew and far between all th other flights I take. The answer to why did I not make them is important. Mechanical issues on an earlier flight will allow those passengers to act as a standby as you do. The other is weather, where stuff happens and flights don't come in so everyone else is trying to leave early. In your situation for any of those events you would be placed on the plane before I would be. You paid $$ and I didn't.
