The tragedy is we will never know whether those killed in this incident
were terrorist, enemy combatants, sympathiser, or just ordinary folks
visiting in the streets of their city in broad daylight.

Using conventional warfare in a setting that is anything other than
conventional combat is messy. There are no military uniforms
associating the players with one side or another, or to a particular
unit or outfit. The terrorists hide in the shadows or conceal
themselves in plan sight, hidden as member of the general population.

In order to know whether a target is valid requires information,
investigation, collaboration, etc more suited to the skills of police
and law enforcement, not the military. The methods used during the US
occupation of Iraq were unsound in my opinion.

At least we have a President today in Barack Obama, that has put America
back on track. Hopefully he will bring the insanity going on in
Afganistan to a end, and he is much less tolerant of collateral damage
in the conflicts taking place in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
