No help with hardware, here, I'm assuming you'll get the best you can
afford.
I went with Win 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, and have more than once kicked
myself for getting 64 bit instead of 32 bit. Found various apps that
wouldn't run under 64 bit. (Cisco VPN comes to mine right off the bat.)
Have eventually found 64 bit versions or replacements for the
affected programs (even Cisco caved into public demand and made a 64 bit
version), but it has been annoying. Don't really notice that 64 bit is
making anything faster or not, as this computer is so much faster than
my old one to begin with.
Also, If I could go back, I would have gotten the professional version
instead of HE, because there are several programs that just won't run on
Win7, and I could use XP mode for those.
Finally, when I installed VFP9 on this computer, it defaults (as do all
32 bit programs) to installing in to "program files (x86)". I didn't
catch it at the time, but all of my projects stopped working until I
hacked the PJX files, and changed "program files" to "program files
(x86)." I don't know if I should have overridden the install path, or
just did what I did and hacked the project files, or something else.
Also the VFP DSN items don't seem to show up in the ODBC data sources,
although they still work, and you can still edit them via VFP.
Aside from what has been mostly small annoyances, no real problems, and
VFP seems to work just fine. Overall I've been pretty impressed with Win7.
