I think the problem is that you are trying to sort numeric data in a
character field.

You can create a new index like
Index on padl(invno,10,'0') tag invsort

Then you should get the sort you are looking for

All of this is interesting, but I don't see an answer to my problem.

When I browse the table, all is fine, and I don't see any index issues I can
browse the table from any workstation, and all appears fine

I also created a special little routine where instead of printing the
invoice, i simply place a record into a temporary table.
i.e. instead of "report form (winreport)", I place it in a table All the
records appear in this table in the correct order

Its only when we PRINT the invoices that they get out of order
