I have a similar answering machine which gets telemarketing calls routed to it by an InterceptorID box <http://www.interceptorid.com/>. Because the default outgoing messages starts with "Hello <pause>" it has a tendency to trick predictive dialers into staying on-line as if a live person had answered. Sometimes I can hear the boiler room background noise or a confused telemarketer, but often there's just silence or line noise. If you have Caller ID you might check to see if your mystery calls correlate with any particular "TOLL FREE' or "OUT OF AREA" numbers, as they are typically telemarketers using predictive dialers.
