Mike:
Cat-5 and cat-6 have a maximum length of 100 meters. You might push that if you
are in an area of no other electrical interference.
The shorter the cable the better as there is a velocity factor with electrical
signals through wire.
I don't think you could see a difference (without a $20K piece of test gear) on
speeds between 100' and 5 feet.
Most cat-5 (and 6) cables have issues when they become kinked or when placed
near a source of other substantial EMF like a ballast to fluorescent lighting.
I had issues on my work network when the 'electrician' ran a cat-5 cable or a
fluorescent light fixture. I moved the wire and all was right with the world
again.
The number of twists per foot determines how noise free the signal will be.
Cat3 has less twists per foot and therefore has a different capacitance figure
and a shorter allowable run. When I spec'd out the phone system in the new
Prudential Center I wanted all cat-6 just incase we went to VOIP (which we did)
so cat-3 would not have been a good choice.
Regards,

Jack

Subject: [NF] Signal delivery over long ethernet cable

I know for electricity extension cords, sometimes the power drops over
really long cords. Do really long ethernet cords have a similar drop of
the signal they carry? I'm talking about 25 feet of cable. Would the
user have a better signal/speed if she were right at the router in my
home instead of half-way across the room?
