I like leaving it to "get ip address automatically" but then on my dhcp server 
(dhcp3 
on Linux) I set the ip address to give to specific machines based on their MAC 
address.

This allows giving static ip addresses to known machines, and dynamic addresses 
(and 
shorter leases) to unknown machines.
