Hi Geoff,

I left in 1981, it was heading down then. The colored, not to say "black
racist", politicians swore that if only *they* were elected everything
would be fine. They were elected, and then they couldn't resist a little
self dealing and patronage. First you knew, that was all they were doing
- self dealing and patronage, while Detroit burned, literally. The worst
was Kwame Kilpatrick who was sent to prison.

There are a *lot* of kids in Detroit who don't have any male role
models. The mothers probably do tell the kids what to do - and not do,
but at a certain age a boy will only listen to a man. The boys got to
burning down vacant houses for laughs, it became *the* fad. The homeless
also probably torched a few by accident by nodding off in the warmth of
an unsafe fire and strong drink or worse.

You would be driving down the street and the houses would be blazing
away right beside the road. Take the fire department an hour to get
there because there were so many fires. In an hour the house was beyond
repair.

Last I heard they were considering converting large areas to
agriculture, then withdrawing most city services from the agriculturally
designated areas. Sad end to what was once home sweet home to millions
of middle class working families.
