I also suspect that a lot of people went to linux and were underwhelmed.
most of us just want to do our jobs and have the tools available. The
emphasis on operating systems is a 'techo' emphasis. Users just want the
tools and a simple environment but at the same time they want to use the
same thing they do at home. Operating systems are a means to an end - not
the end in itself.
