Excellent idea!

New? :) PHP (and Python and Ruby) are 15 years old -ish! You're
certainly avoiding the bleeding edge :)

I've worked in PHP since 2004, spent a couple of years working in
Ruby, and admire a lot of the work I've seen in Python. All are worth
learning, at least enough to get by. Coming from VFP, you may find
Python a little easier to pick up, and may appreciate the more
sophisticated frameworks in Python and Ruby a bit more than PHP.

I haven't read their php tutorial, but I have to warn you that a lot
of folks who's opinions I suggest feel their HTML info is badly
out-of-date and that their advice is poor.

I have found few communities on the Internet as friendly and welcoming
as the FoxPro forums in days of yore.

You can certainly start learning with the excellent resources to be
found at http://php.net such as http://www.php.net/manual/en/

I'd encourage you to try to locate a local user group and work from
your local community outwards.
