Actually, I think I'm liking MB's original approach the best, especially from a maintenance standpoint... If I were to come across this code above I can figure out pretty quick what his intention is - it either blows up or it doesn't. The other methods I would have to either assume the author had the algorithm right in the first place and that's assuming I could piece it together and follow along. K.I.S.S.
