It makes the noise AS it goes to sleep, all the time it is asleep, or when you wake it up?
Fans are easy to diagnose...stick your finger in it and if it stops, it's the fan. (If your finger won't fit, use a paper clip.) Hard drive noises are easy too...just put a screw driver tip against the case and the other end against your ear...if you hear the same sound get louder, it's the hard drive.
