First off, you can think of Real Software Inc. as a 'what if' Microsoft
only owned and developed Visual Foxpro and West-Wind Web Connection.
This would be their only focus and all of their effort would go into
developing those two products. That's a good thing. Of course, their
"Visual Foxpro" equivalent wouldn't only develop for Windows but for Mac
and Linux as well. That's a daunting task to keep all (4) platforms in
sync as much as possible.

I'm not a Web Edition expert but I've played with it a bit.

The Web Edition is very young. They're still making some big changes
but the experts say it's forming up nicely ... except for IE stuff. (Of
course.) It looks like huge progress is being made to towards having
developers drag, drop, and create code behind in a visual IDE that hides
a lot of the complex HTML5 interactions between the client and server.

Deployment, just like West-Wind Web Connection and other VFP based web
solutions, is problematic. Your best bet is to buy a Linux based VPS,
EEC, co-located, or internally hosted box. This way, you get full
control over what is installed and how things are configured. A $10/mo
shared PHP account won't cut it.

The new Web Edition is influencing the traditional Real Studio to
standardise some controls to keep parity from the desktop and web. I
believe that it is very possible to keep business objects that will work
well both on desktop and web edition.

It is definitely worth looking into now, but I would wait another 6
months to a year to release a public facing commercial application.
