One of my barbecue team mates who left Fed Ex for Krogers was doing a
similar thing with free hand held devices.  You shot the barcode of an
item and while at the store it would remind you via a list by isle of
what you needed.  It did a lot of other stuff like identify repeat
purchases you make and would remind you when things were in their
replacement cycle for you.  We had a discussion on how to cycle MILK
reminders.  They were never funded but I bet the iStore and Android
versions will be out this year.   The early version was just as this
was described, GPS centric.  Each store layout was known so you could
see where you had to go in a store you didn't frequent.
