In the 1970's I was an ER doc at Santa Monica Hospital in Santa Monica CA. I worked 12 hour shifts, 5 days on, 5 days off. Arness came in one evening. We all treated him like any other patient. We had a lot of 'Hollywood' type people in that ED so it was not that unusual. I did not act like he was anything other than an ordinary person and he acted like an ordinary person. He was a little taller that most, but otherwise, just a nice guy. Little did he know that I grew up watching Gunsmoke on black and white TV with my family. My father was not living at that time, but I know he would be very proud to think that his kid was Matt Dillon's doctor if only for a few hours one evening. I have a lot of stories like that from my time in that ED. I loved practicing medicine - for more than 20 years. Unfortunately the insurance companies and lawyers eventually took all the fun out of it. But my hobby is programming and it turned out to be a great second career.
