Is there any way to protect computers from the consequences of either a

Sure! Turn them off, unplug any cables, disconnect any antennas
(especially the internal wifi and bluetooths!), remove all the
batteries, and keep them in caves with sealed steel doors.

Is there any reason to worry about such events?
Sure there is. That's why we make backups, offsite backups, offline
backups, and buy cheap, replaceable machines.

Of course, there are a lot of things MORE important to be worried
about: viruses, web exploits, tomorrow's Microsoft emergency
out-of-cycle IE patch (really), boot block viruses, Steve Ballmer,
trojan horse exploits, DotNet, hackers, Azure, malicious employees,
Oracle, JavaScript,...

Yep, keep worrying, worrying, worrying, worrying, worrying, worrying,......... Specially now that you're so close to election time, fear is your best friend.
LOL
