You're correct, there is no setting to do that. What you can do is "look ahead" at each level while you're building the tree view to see if there are any child records or not. While it does slow things down a bit, it is a much more accurate view of what lies ahead. If you only fill the top level at the beginning, it's barely noticeable and then add the lower levels on an "as needed" basis (when you actually click on it). You have full control.
