I've run into a similar situation in that the mapped drives are not accessible but it's because the server can no longer be accessed. Can't click on the drives in explorer and reconnect, the only solution I've found is reboot the workstation. It's like the internal LAN has gone down, but the workstation can still access the internet, it just can't "see" the server anymore.
